our ticketing + event guidelines

music, art + culture should be available and accessible to all who want to
participate - whether you’re making it or engaging in it. full stop. with that, though, there are also real & steep costs that come with organising, developing and sustaining local independent events and cultural programmes today. so, how do we balance the two?
it’s something I, and among many others have been thinking about - and tackling in our own ways. and it’s often felt like this jostle between quality, accessibility and sustainability - where only one of the three can flourish.
today marks a new step, and one that’s (hopefully) closer towards realising our shared, core belief - while finding creative ways to sustainably continue producing unique events across the city.
– we’ll be introducing a new ticketing model to all our events, allowing you to attend our events in a way that’s right for you and your circumstances.
on top of that - we think this model creates an active and transparent dialogue between organisers, artists, dancers, venue owners, listeners + the many others that form this community we’re all in.
right now: this feels like the easiest way to address both sides of this messy, but eternally fulfilling quest to provide an ambitious, diverse and inspiring programme of events for everyone to experience.
we also recognise that accessibility goes a lot deeper than just cash. this is also about challenging the perceived (and real) exclusivity, elitism, and classism that plagues a lot of local + global cultural spaces.
we’re doing this out of a pure love for sharing meaningful moments, stories, ideas from and about the people of Johannesburg and far beyond.
and hoping to build a space where going to a classical music show, or a punk night with a gqom DJ in between the bands is a regular occurrence in our cultural lives here.
as a working artists invovled with Lilies – we’re building alternative ways of organising where non-traditional, anti-corporate
like this can continue to exist. this – obviously - requires a lot of time to coordinate and organise. If you’ve ever wondered how to help - this your sign!
Every ticket purchase, membership & donation & telling a friend goes a long way towards establishing the artist-owned infrastructure that we deserve. Join today to sustain our free admission model and keep our programming affordable and accessible to everybody. As membership grows, so can our already ambitious calendar.
how it works
so: a limited amount of free tickets will always available for our events. however, we’ll have a standard* R100 online ticket, and R150 door ticket – along with tickets priced on either side of that – allowing you to choose a ticket depending on what’s currently comfortable for you.
this standard price is calculated on our average cost per event, and a general sense of what events have been priced at around us. it may vary – depending on scale of production. *
Use the below guidelines to help decide what tier of sliding scale you can afford:

Event Guidelines
We won’t put any stickers on your phones - but cameras and filming (only) on dancefloors + in front of stages isn’t encouraged. We won’t police you on this, just please respect it. The intention is to build a private, temporary space for expression + liberation. Cameras just feel a lil’ invasive in the moment of it all. If you want to document something special, sure – but try keep it to the sides of the dancefloor / stage.
Put your smokable butts into a nearby bin or ashtray (extra points if you have a portable ashtray - If you don’t have one - find a friend or stranger who does.) Just don’t throw them on the ground, please. The land is not a trashcan, or an ashtray.
